How to Give KhutbasIt’s really hard getting hold of information such as this. When you search on Google you’ll find stuff on Khutba, i.e. Khutbas that were delivered, but not on how to give a khutba (sermon). Here’s a widely applied Khutbah delivery (its the way I’ve seen qualified Imams give Khutbah): Step 1: Just before beginning the khutba, the khateeb (the person giving khutbah) stands up and gives salam to the people and sits down. The mu’azzin (caller to prayer) stands up and gives the azaan (call) to pronounce the beginning of the khutba. (Note: the first azaan has already been given) Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu (Note: Some Imam’s don’t do this since this is recommended and not obligatory.) Step 2: Khateeb stands up again and begins with Khutbat-ul-Haajjah. This bit is always done in Arabic. Here’s what you should say: Al-hamdu Lillaahi nahmaduhu wa nasta’eenahu wa nastaghfiruhu, wa na’oodhu billaahi min shuroori anfusinaa wa min sayi’aati a’maalinaa. Man yahdih Illaahu falaa mudilla lahu wa man yudlil falaa haadiya lahu. Wa ashhadu an laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu la sharika lahu wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasooluhu sallalahu alayhi wa ala alihi wasallam wa ba’ad. (Praise be to Allaah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, the One, having no partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger). Step 3: Invoke people to be God conscious by reciting the ayats which has the words Taqwa in it, such as: (O you who believe! Fear Allaah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam )[Aal ‘Imraan 3:103], (O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person, and from him He created his wife, and from them both He created many men and women, and fear Allaah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship) Surely, Allaah is Ever an All-Watcher over you).’ [al-Nisaa’ 4:1], (O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allaah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth).’ [al-Ahzaab 33:70].” End the ayats by reminding people: Yuslih Lakum A’malukum wa yaghfir lakum dhunubakum wa mayin yuti illaha wa rasulahu faqad faza fauzan adheema. Amma Ba’ad (He will direct you to righteous deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messanger has indeed achieved a great achievement.) Fainna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khairal hadi, hadi Muhammad (saw), wa sharrul umur muhdathatuha, wa kullu bida’atin dalaala, wa kullu dalalatin finnar. Step 4: Relate the contents of the Khutbah, choosing topical issues that will address some of the issues of the Muslims, and addressing them from a viewpoint of advice. The prophet (pbuh) and the companions always used to choose the most important issues of their time. Topics can be to do with ibadat (ritual) or mu’amalat (societal). If you’re not sure about the topic ask an Aalim (knowledgeable person about Islam) or even the people attending the khutba. Don’t let khutbas become dry! Then, end the first half with a du’a such as “Aqoolo qawli hadha wastaghfirullaha li wa lakum” Step 5: Take a break by sitting down for few seconds. The break splits the khutba in two halves. Step 6: Stand up again and praise Allah and send salam on the Prophet(saw) “AlHamdulillah was Salatu Wassalamu ‘ala Rasulullah” Step 7: Deliver the second half of the khutba. Give advice to people, call them to reflect and act on the advice in the best possible manner. Step 8: End the second half with durood (praises) and du’a. Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ‘aali Muhammadin, kama salaiyta ‘ala Ibrahima wa ‘ala ‘aali Ibrahima innaka Hamidun Majeed. Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin, Some du’as: [Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire.] End with the words: Wa aqimissalah [And begin the prayer]
